Internal Parasite Control for Horses in Central Florida

There have been (and still are) many different programs for internal parasites of horses. They vary from low dosages of antiparasitics (wormers or de‐wormers) to no use of chemical de‐wormers. The goal is not to eliminate parasites, but to control them. Internal parasites can lead to: weight gain failure and weight loss; colic; diarrhea; and death. Heavy worm infestation can result in weakening of the immune system, loss of nutrients, and organ damage. Read More

Thistle Control in Pasture

A single thistle plant can produce at least 4,000 seeds, which increases the chance for higher thistle populations in the pasture the following year. Consequently, management practices need to be conducted prior to flower formation for effective thistle control. Even if thistles have not infested your pasture in the past, it is ideal that your pastures are scouted in late fall through mid‐spring (November to March) to ensure that thistles do not get out of control. New infestations are easier to manage than large‐scale populations. Read More

Safety Considerations with Back Yard Chickens

While enjoying all the benefits of raising back yard chickens, it is also important to remember the risk of illness. This can result from playing in the area where they are kept or through handling the live birds. Poultry of any kind are carriers of harmful bacteria called Salmonella. Salmonella is a type of germ that naturally lives in the intestines of poultry and many other animals. Even organically fed poultry have Salmonella. While it usually doesn't make the birds sick, the bacteria can cause serious illness when it is passed to humans. Learn how to prevent this illness from occuring in your family.

Whole Farm Integrated Pest Management

The Whole Farm Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy is to design and establish agricultural systems that are pest resistant and as a result, rarely requires potentially disruptive pest control practices. Whole Farm IPM is the pest management segment of agroecology, the design and management of sustainable farms or agroecosystems. These systems support agricultural production in healthy environments, consider economics and the viability of agricultural communities, and take advantage of ecosystem services, such as biological control of pests and crop pollination. Whole Farm IPM is particularly applicable to small farms which include more than 90% of farms in the Southeast. Visit the UF/IFAS Virtual Field website for this and other educational videos.
